Greenstar

Green Star NZ is an environmental rating system for buildings.

Buildings have a significant impact on the environment. They consume 32% of the worlds resources, including 12% of its water and up to 40% of its energy. Buildings also produce 40% of landfill waste and 40% of air emissions.

The Green Star NZ rating system is introduced by the New Zealand Green Building Council(NZGBC).

Green Star NZ assesses a building projects green building considerations like energy and water efficiency, indoor environment quality, use of materials and resource conservation.

Green Star NZ was created to:

  • Establish a common language and standard of measurement for green buildings
  • Promote integrated, whole-building design
  • Raise awareness of green building benefits
  • Recognize environmental leadership
  • Reduce the environmental impact of development

Green Star NZ recognizes and rewards market leaders, so the NZGBC only formally certifies designs, projects or buildings that achieve a rating of Four, Five or Six stars.

Meaning of the star ratings:

Four Star              New Zealand Best practice

Five Star               New Zealand Excellence

Six Star                 World Leader

Look at the NZGBC website if Green Star is available for your building type. www.nzgbc.org.nz

New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC)

NZGBC's vision is that New Zealanders work and live in healthy, efficient, productive and environmentally sustainable buildings, today and into the future. NZGBC aims to accelerate the development and adoption of market based green building practices in New Zealand.

Benefits of a Green Star certification

  • Enjoying greater wellbeing and productivity of the buildings occupants by providing a healthy environment.
  • Possible lower operating cost of the building.
  • Environmental benefits.
  • Having the competitive edge by promoting the building as environmentally friendly.
  • Gaining national and international market recognition as a leader in the green building industry.
  • Establishing a competitive commercial advantage when seeking occupants or buyers for the building.
  •  Validating the achievement through third party assessment.

Who does the Greens Star rating

The Green Star ratings are determined by the assessors working at the New Zealand Green Building Council.

The Green Star NZ Accredited Professional (GSNZAP) prepares the application for certification and collects the documentation. She/he is the main point of contact with the New Zealand Green Building Council and is responsible for the quality of the submission.

The GSNZAP will be a member of the design team and encourages environmental sustainable design principles from the earliest projects stages through to construction.

Green Star NZ Accredited Professionals are experienced building industry practitioners who have demonstrated their understanding of the Green Star NZ rating system and the benefits of integrated design. In order to become a Green Star NZ Accredited Professional, candidates attend two NZGBC Green Star NZ Accredited Professional courses (Level 1 and Level 2) and pass the associated exam.

Cost

The costs for Green Star NZ certification consist of a fee payable to the NZGBC and the hourly rate for the Green Star NZ Accredited Professional.
